“Eventually, there will be hope and more treatments,” she said. “You eventually reach a point when there are no more options,” Taggart said. Last year at Fashion Island, 5-year-old John and his family raised about $10,000 for Alex’s Lemonade Stand, a nonprofit group that raises money for pediatric cancer research through lemonade stands across the country. His parents hope to hold the event every year.

John died in October, after losing a three-year battle against neuroblastoma. “It’s like he was up there serving lemonade,” said Tamara Taggart. Its not uncommon for children to become too engrossed with hunting and their training spiders to even come home. With the help of volunteers, many of them kids, the family accepted more than $7,500 in donations at Fashion Island, said Allison Olmstead, who helped the Costa Mesa family run the event.
